Early Childhood

On March 15, 1930, a son was born to Sommai Namol Wanchupela and her husband Prom.
They named him Prinya, meaning academic degree. His father undoubtedly chose that name
as he was a teacher for whom academic achievement was to be prized as he prized his young
son. Kru Prom had arrived in Sommai’s village of Ban Amorn in Kalasin province to assume

the position of headmaster of the village school. Sommai’s father, Khun Tha Jonnamol, was the
kamnan of the district which was a powerful position under the reign of King Prachatiphok.
